Different Types of Addiction

Just about anything that you take part in can become an addictive behavior. Let’s take drinking for example. Everybody that drinks alcohol is not an an alcoholic. The more a person drinks as a substitute for something that they feel they are missing, that is when something normal becomes an addictive behavior. Majority of the alcoholics that I know became this way because they were trying to fill a void, or they either just wanted a way to make some sort of pain go away. Lots of people who have been traumatized as children, do not want to remember the feeling that they felt when they went through that specific experience.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders

Another bad addiction that exists in this country, is fact that lots of people are addicted to things that they should not be addicted to. My sister has obsessive compulsive disorder and that is her addiction. She is addicted to having everything in a particular place. If she can not find what ever it is that she is looking for, if it is not in the place that she put it, she will automatically have a meltdown. That is why no one ever goes into her room. She is afraid that something might not be in the place that it needs to be in order for her to get to it when she needs it.

Drug Addiction

Drugs are a huge thing that people can become addicted to. Once you try certain things, it is hard for your body not to crave those things. The more you let your body win, the more your body is going to crave that substance in the future. Drugs can range from crack cocaine, to glue and paint. Many of the people in the younger generation have moved on from using weed and things of that nature to become high. They have started taking over the counter medications so that they can get that same high, but not have to pay nearly as much.

Porn Addiction

While many people will argue whether this is an addiction or not there are people who have an addiction to porn. This is manifest in many forms including porn viewing, jumping from relationship to relationship, and one night stands.

Some women have been hurt to the point where they will do anything to make that particular pain go away. Majority of this group are the people who are classified as cutters. When they cut themselves, it releases something that makes it not only painful, but pleasurable. This is what these people are addicted to.

Eating Disorders

The most annoying addiction that costs its victims billions in diets, prescriptions, cosmetic surgeries and private mental health counseling is the addiction to food. A food addiction has no set pattern, is not ruled by any one emotion, has no found cure and can’t be completely cured or the victim will die. There is no worse perplexing problem than food addiction. To even think of eating oneself to death is almost unthinkable and, still, there are millions of people who are doing just that, eating themselves to death. Food addiction does have a basic framework that some clinical therapists as well as medical practitioners have tried to get a handle on and millions made by selling those clues to normalcy away from food addiction to victims of food addiction.

A food addiction is a need to continuously eat. The type of food doesn’t matter. What matters is that food or whatever can pass as food (including paper cartons) can be chewed and swallowed. Very obese victims of food addiction have been known to eat items that were once only used as jokes on television shows that showed goats eating everything and anything including cans. The food addict is often ridiculed even more than other addicts since people assume that his avaricious need to eat while carrying 300 pounds of fat is totally of his own choosing. Nothing can be more from the truth.

The sad but true story of the food addict is an addiction that is not illegal, can’t be permanently stopped and still can kill you. Most food addicts resort to hiding in their homes and ordering online or through neighbors. A food addict is not likely to join a gym or an exercise studio for professional help from trainers and dietitians. A real food addict will often be found dead from asphyxiation since the huge weight makes breathing impossible. Finding food addicts through local outreach programs is also not an option since society has placed a stigma on the food addict and would rather think of them as a Confucius or a insatiable glutton. Help for the food addict is sometimes left only to family members who might grow very tired of handling the food addict and his seemingly unsolvable issues.

Other addictions range from having to constantly wash your hands, as well as lots of eating disorders. None of these addiction can be stopped on their own. They all require some sort of help.
